William Deyesso, who leads Buyer's Choice, a full-service insurance administration firm, is a concerned citizen who donates to several worthy causes. For instance, William Deyesso supports Project Place, an agency that enables Boston homeless to find jobs and housing.
Project Place began as a home for runaway youth. In the 1970s, its direction changed to serve adults by providing legal services, counseling and life skills. The agency now focuses on occupational skills and workplace education, taught in month-long training modules. The first month consists of Work Ready, a class that meets 20 hours a week. Activities include assessing students' job experiences and preferences, consulting one-on-one with caseworkers, and learning the essentials of customer service. Caseworkers partner with students for the next two years as they find work, accumulate experience, and deal with personal issues.
As students progress through later modules, they are linked with various training methods. They can continue to focus on literacy, obtain certification in hardware and software, or participate in internships. At the same time, caseworkers help students find affordable housing. Project Place has 14 studio apartments for both genders. The local YWCA provides shelter for women making the transition from being homeless to being employed. The women can stay for up to six months and use the time to develop money management skills.
